Is it standard practice for dentists to use a different type of filling without informing the patient?
Hope you can help me. I am with my NHS dentist practice for nearly 10 years. I went for a dental treatment which included filling on my wisdom tooth this week (this is the third time I have this on done on the same tooth in the space of three years). For my surprise when I got home the filling they used is different, shiny and dark. I have not been told that a different filling would be used and I was not given choice as to whether have it or not. I called the dental practice as I am very dissatisfied and initially I was told I got the same materials than last time (from their recordings), but when I said that its definitely not the same I was told that the NHS no longer covers white filling for back teeth so that may be it . The dentist was the same one that did it last time and I had told her at the time that I hate silver filling, there was no discussion this time so I assumed she remembered or was on my file. I feel that I should have been informed of this change and given the option to pay a top up for white filling if needed, as I am very self conscious about my teeth. What if I was allergic?? I am told that if I want it sorted/changed I need to go privately. I dont think that's fair as they have not informed me of any changes and my options. What can I do? Am I wrong in thinking they should fixed it for free or at least I should be charged an extra for white filling only but not for the whole procedure again? TIA

NQ- The extra for a white filling is usually £80 plus. White fillings are also generally not as stable, as you’ve found out. If you requested NHS treatment then you’ve got what’s provided on the NHS. It sounds more like a lack of communication than anyone being at fault.

Nq - went to my NHS dentist a few months back and requested a white filling. They weren't allowed to do white fillings at the time as it was purely cosmetic. Covid rules apparently. Even if you had requested it, its likely they wouldn't have been allowed. 🤷 U can still go private and get it done.

NQ I’ve only ever had dark fillings. My friend is a dental practice manager and I believe they would replace it but you’d need to do it as a private patient and pay full non nhs price.

Qualified dental professional, it will be amalgam which is all the NHS covers for posterior teeth, white fillings are private and like the above said not as durable, white fillings also take longer to place so the receptionist would need informing when making the appointment

NQ: white fillings aren't as long lasting as silver, plus for back teeth they don't do the white ones (which are private) for back, unless specifically requested. chances are that they continue to be replaced because the previous were white ones.

Qualified dental professional - your medical records should be updated each appointment, you would need to update the dentist of any changes in health / medications. Composite fillings are private for molars and pre-molars. Dentist should discuss all treatment options available however if you’ve signed a treatment plan then you’ve signed to agree for the treatment to be carried out. You can put in a written request to have your records to see what filling you had done previously on your wisdom tooth.

Nq - I also feel they sgould have absolutely given you the option, at.least told you ther were going to use Amalgam. A few here are saying the white ones are less stabke at the back, and yes white ones arnt as strong but the dentist i go to now wont even use amalgam as its not good for the body. I would write to the dentist manager and tell you were never told of the change or offered a choice.
