What are the implications of a partner's ex expecting their child to be cared for by the new partner during school breaks?
My friend is not on social media at all. Has been with her partner now for a year and a half They have lived together for a year Not married He has a 5 year old son with his ex partner who.works 5 6 hour shifts monday to Friday. He has his son 3 nights every week. He works 12 hour shifts weekdays all.around tbe country. My friend has been working from home since Covid. She is expected by her partners ex to have his son with her during school breaks even though she has a full time job where she is answering calls with the public making appointments and attending meetings. My friend is concerned as she has no parental.responsibility and is worried would she be held accountable if the child had an accident in her care because she could not watch him while she was on a call etc Her partners ex is aware ny friend is working at home and not just unemployed. Her patner does try and take days off as A/L when he can to look.after his son in.the holidays.but its not always possible. His ex does not try to take days off at all.and puts the care on my friend. This impacts her job as she is distracted several times a day by the child is with her.

The father taking tbe child to.work.is not doable as he works heights in construction. Tbe ex works in a shop . She has family but still.expects my friend to be childminder .becauae she is at home. My friend is worried about her position legally if the child had an accident or became ill while with her . She is unhappy about siruation.and has voiced tbis to.tbe ex to no avail

Nq. But sounds like she should talk to her partner about the child. If the child is left with her with her permission she would have a duty of care and would be responsible for child's safety. If left with a child without her permission it would be neglect from partners side and should be reported to the police. Obviously both would not be good for a healthy relationship.

If the child took ill and needed medical attention what is her position she is not a step parent ir parent.and cannot consent for treatment if meeded. Partner could be miles away and childs mother does not always respond to messages to calls

NQ your local authority will have details of holiday clubs or the child’s school may run something.

NQ it is the father's responsibility to sort out childcare for the time his son is in his care during school holidays. If his partner cannot help, which seems reasonable as she is working, he would either have to find a friend/family member or holiday club.

NQ - childcare is the responsibility of both parents. What arrangements where in place before your friend moved in. The onus shouldn’t be on your friend to babysit someone else’s child to the detriment of her own job. What would happen if she had to return to the office to work.
