What do you suggest the person do about an outstanding debt of 12 grand for care costs, received in a letter from the council, after being led to believe it was all sorted?
Hi I hope you can advise me. My husbands dad past away nearly a year ago. The solicitors sorted out and paiD off his debts for us and what was left over was distributed between the 5 children. We have recently received a letter from the council nearly a year later saying there is an outstanding debt of 12 grand for care costs. I'm totally shocked as we were led to believe it was all sorted. What do you suggest please? 😰

Nq (work in finance for a care company) - if the estate is settled and no money remains then reply to the council to state this, they legally can't make you pay the debt if no assets/ settled. That's quite a high sum, the council should have been chasing anything unpaid even before your fil passed away.
