    Amazing experience

After placing an enquiry, I received a call 20 minutes later, and then 2 hours later, I had a solicitor assigned to me. They were absolutely incredible right from the word go - amazing and very prompt with replies, answering all my questions and keeping the process moving. We finally completed today and I am so unbelievably happy. I wouldn’t hesitate to use Lawhive again in the future if needed.

I initially made an online enquiry about a tricky conveyancing matter and received an immediate call back. They understood straight away what was needed and gave me a quote that was very reasonable. It was such a pleasure to find someone who was cheerful, professional and completely reassuring as I’d been getting quite anxious about the sale of my house. The service Lawhive has provided is absolutely first class and I cannot recommend them enough.

Great service when you need clarity and calm

Our solicitor was warm, friendly and provided crystal clear communication. A lot of conveyancers assume customers know everything about the process already, so it was really appreciated to hear each stage included in the price given.

How our cancelled flight compensation solicitors can help

Flight cancellations are more than just inconvenient - they can leave you frustrated and out of pocket. But claiming compensation doesn’t have to be another headache. With Lawhive’s network of expert solicitors, you’ll have the support you need to get back what’s rightfully yours. Here’s how we can help:

Assessing claims and compensationOur solicitors will review the details of your case to check if you’re eligible for compensation. They’ll guide you through the process to ensure you claim the maximum amount you’re entitled to.
Handling airline disputes and rejectionsWhen airlines push back or refuse claims, our solicitors step in. They’ll challenge rejections, deal with your airline directly, and escalate your case to the Passenger Advice and Complaints Team (PACT) if needed.
Representing you in courtSome claims are more complicated - think group bookings or multi-leg flights with severe delays. If it comes to legal proceedings, a skilled litigation lawyer will prepare your case and represent you in court.
Enforcing compensation paymentAirlines dragging their feet? No problem. Our solicitors can enforce compensation payments through legal channels, ensuring you get what you’re owed without unnecessary delays.

How do I know if my flight is eligible for compensation?

Under the UK261 regulation (previously EU261), you can claim compensation if the flight cancellation was the airline’s responsibility, if your flight was cancelled less than 14 days before departure or if you arrived at your destination on a replacement flight by three hours or more. However, the amount you can claim for cancelled flights might depend on how long before the scheduled departure the airline informed you of the cancellation.

What is UK261?

UK261 regulations, established after Brexit, are the UK’s equivalent of EU261. It entitles consumers to compensation and refunds when flights are delayed or cancelled. Under UK261, passengers are entitled to compensation when their flight is delayed or cancelled and they arrive at their destination more than three hours later than scheduled. The amount of compensation available depends on the length of the flight.

What are extraordinary circumstances?

An airline can cite 'extraordinary circumstances' as a defence against a flight cancellation claim. And if these extraordinary circumstances apply, you may not be entitled to compensation. The main types of extraordinary circumstances include:

  • Extreme weather conditions
  • Strikes
  • Acts of terrorism or sabotage
  • Political or civil unrest
  • Hidden manufacturing defects

Your right to a refund or a rebooking

When flights are cancelled in the UK, passengers have the right to request a full refund or rebooking. Refunds can be granted for any portion of an unused ticket, including return and onward flights. For replacement flights, your airline must find you an alternative flight to your destination at a time of your choice – as soon as possible, or at a later date.

Solicitors can help clarify your options when refunds are difficult to secure and the alternative flights or air miles offered by airlines are not suitable.

How much could cancelled flight compensation claim be?

Your flight cancellation solicitor will be able to guide you on the exact compensation you could expect to receive. This will differ widely depending on things like the flight length, the time of the delay and so forth.

However, most people don't know that even if your flight is cancelled and you accept a rebooking onto another flight, you could still be eligible for compensation. You can claim different compensation depending on if your flight was cancelled 0-7 or 7-14 days before the departure. Below is a rough estimate that you can use as a guideline:

Flights cancelled less than seven days before departure

Flight lengthTime of alternative flightApprox. compensation
0-1,500km Flight leaves one or more hours earlier than the original flight and lands up to two hours later. Up to £110
1,500-3,500km Flight leaves one or more hours earlier than the original flight and lands less than three hours later.Up to £170
3,500km+Flight leaves one or more hours earlier than the original flight and lands less than four hours laterUp to £260

The flight cancellation claims process explained

Your solicitor will talk you through the entire claims process and what to expect. Here's a quick snapshot of what the typical process might look like:

  1. Initial case assessment: Your solicitor will begin by assessing the circumstances of the cancellation, including its cause, duration, and eligibility under EU/UK regulations.
  2. Submitting your compensation claim: After determining that you have a claim, your solicitor will submit the claim. Solicitors submit the required documentation, including receipts for accommodation and food and pursue a refund.
  3. Negotiation with the airline: When the initial claim is rejected or disputed, solicitors negotiate with airlines on your behalf, striving for a fair outcome.
  4. Legal proceedings (if necessary): Your solicitor can also represent you in court if the airline refuses to pay. A litigation solicitor can present your case, and the evidence and help to secure fair compensation.

What are my next steps?

A cancelled flight can throw your entire travel plans into chaos - and sorting out compensation might feel like yet another hassle. But you don’t have to handle it on your own. If your flight was cancelled unfairly, there are clear legal steps you can take to claim what you’re entitled to.

At Lawhive, we’re here to make it easier. Our flight cancellation solicitors will:

  • Help build your case: We’ll look into the specifics of your flight, gather any necessary evidence (like proof of cancellation and receipts for extra costs), and assess how the disruption has affected you.
  • Explore your best options: Whether it’s negotiating directly with the airline or escalating your claim through legal channels, we’ll tailor our approach to get the best results.
  • Guide you through the process: From your first consultation to securing compensation, we’ll keep things simple, transparent, and focused on getting you the outcome you deserve.
